Paddle School Auction:

Jack Wright in Memoriam

Jack Wright’s whitewater adventure started in the 1930s on trips with his uncle down the Hiawassee and Tennessee from Reliance to Chattanooga. How different that trip must have been then!
From participating in the 1969 Nantahala Canoe Race to his later years spent teaching Boy Scouts, much of Jack Wright’s life was lived on the river. The lessons that he learned there clearly had a deep impact on him. This following article in particular is timeless.

He was a TVCC charter member, present at the early meetings and through forty more years of club happenings, archiving stories, memories and recording some of TVCC’s earliest video footage on Super 8. He was on club trips down sections II and III of the Chattooga years before the movie “Deliverance” made it famous, as well as starting the first Boy Scout Raft Race, a tradition that still carries on today, maintaining a life-long focus on teaching others whitewater safety.

Auctions will feature bundles donated in memory of Jack Wright, by his son John Wright.

These bundles will include the following:
Dagger Torrent Sit-on-top Boats with thigh straps, PFDs, WRSI Helmets, Aqua Bound Paddles, Throw Ropes, Yakima Roof Rack Hardware, Tie Down Straps and More!
Many of my fondest memories from growing up were on the Hiwassee river, my dad’s favorite river, and although I haven’t been much of a paddler in my adult years, I would love to play some small part in maintaining the legacy he started. As John notes in the reprint of one of those articles, my dad was involved in Boy Scouts during the time I was a scout in the late 1990s, and he founded a whitewater program in the local council. My dad was always the resident safety expert (it was his profession too), and he worked hard to pass along his decades of whitewater safety training knowledge to local scouts.
