What: Wilderness First Aid

Date: March 23-March 24

Time: 9:00am-6:00pm (approximately)

Where: Philip Grymes Outdoor Chattanooga Center

Cost: $50/person security deposit refundable after participating in the course minus certification fees and processing fees

Class Size: 6 students

Other Info: The Tennessee Valley Canoe Club will host its first-ever wilderness first aid program. Taught by Carl Schoonover, this 16-hour course will help you prepare for the unexpected in a remote setting. Carl Schoonover is a Health&Safety Institute certified instructor who brings years of teaching and practical experience. Participants will learn how to take care of people who become sick or injured through hands-on scenarios, classroom lectures, and activities. CPR is an available add-on. CPR/AED will be offered on the first night of training. Successful completion of this course will provide a two-year Wilderness First Aid certification from the Health&Safety Institute. Successful completion of the CPR/AED course will provide a two-year Adult CPR/AED certification from the Health&Safety Institute. 

What to Bring: Wear proper clothing, rain gear, notepad, pen/pencil, water, food (optional). There will be a lunch break, and there are restaurants nearby.

What: L4 Swiftwater Rescue 

Where: Ocoee River & Ocoee River Experience (basecamp)

Dates: May 18-19, 2024

Time: 8:00am-5:00pm (approximately)

Cost: $50/person (Refundable deposit at completion of course)

Registration Dates: ​​​April 13 (8:00am)-May 15 (midnight)

Class Size: 15 participants (others will be waitlisted)

Other Info: An ACA L4 Swiftwater Rescue course taught on the Ocoee River by TVCC's Team Safety, the club's current and qualified SWR instructor team. Students must be comfortable paddling Class III whitewater. This course is on the Ocoee river, but we will not be paddling any of the named rapids. Saturday will be a half day water training in the morning, half day land based training at camp in the afternoon. We will meet at the Ocoee private boater take out on Saturday at 8:00am. Link to location Big Creek Access. This is not river time! Please be there and ready to go by 8:00am! Land based training and camping will be at Ocoee River Experience. Link to location Ocoee River Experience. Camping and lodging is available at Ocoee River Experience. Call (423) 281-4959 to make a reservation. Sunday will be a full day on the water. Make sure to bring water and food with you. We highly recommend drysuits because the water will be cold.

 

Required equipment to participate in the course.

All gear can be purchased at an outfitter store (Rock Creek, Nantahala Outdoor Center, Endless River Adventure). The club also has loaner gear that you can borrow.

  •     Normal paddling gear (boat, paddle, helmet, etc.)
  •     Closed toe shoes
  •     Rescue PFD (some may be available as loaners)
  •      Rescue tether
  •      Three locking carabiners (screw or twist gate)
  •      A throw rope (50 foot length and 1/4 inch minimum)
  •      One 20 foot section of 1 inch tubular nylon webbing
  •      Two 6 foot sections of prussic cord (5mm preferred, 6mm can work)
  •      Two rescue pulleys (1" prussik minding--smc crx, omega ice, fusion rescue all work)
     

*Drug and alcohol use will not be permitted before or during on-water activities.

Other Info: Want to know how to help rescue a friend, but you don't know how? Or do you know how to self-rescue? Then join our Rescue Rodeo! This class is designed to give the beginner kayaker basic river rescue skills to make whitewater trips safer and more fun.  You will learn whitewater safety philosophy, equipment, how to re-enter a swamped boat, how to tow swimmers using your boat, equipment recovery techniques, how to swim in whitewater, and much more. This is a river rescue skills course the club has designed for new boaters. This is not a regular whitewater training trip.  We will be running the Hiwassee River. You need to have the required skills and equipment. This is an all day course. The morning will be land based instruction at Hiwassee Outfitters. Link to location Hiwassee Outfitters.You will be on the water all afternoon. The class will run from 8:00am-7:00pm EST. Sign in will be from 8:00am-8:30am EST. After the class is over, we will have dinner. Catering will be provided for everyone, so there will be no need to provide your own dinner. Required gear: 

  • Paddle gear: Boat, paddle, spray skirt, PFD, and whitewater helmet. 

  • Clothing: Dress for the swim. You will be swimming on the Hiwassee, which is cold. You will have an opportunity to change into your paddling clothes after we finish our morning classroom activities. 

  • Food: Bring your lunch and enough water for a full day on and off the river. 

  • Other: Chair, sunscreen, bug spray. 

 

PREREQUISITE SKILLS: 

  • Students MUST know how to swim

  • Students MUST be able to perform a wet exit without assistance

  • Students MUST be able to paddle class I-II whitewater (Hiwassee)
