S Chickamauga Creek ~ Graysville to Camp Jordan

EVENT: S. Chickamauga Creek from Graysville Dam to Camp Jordan Upper Ramp
Date:  June 15, 2024
 
Details:
     - Class I trip of 7 miles and about 3.75 hours on the South Chickamauga Creek
     - Put on at the Graysville Mill ramp and take out at the Camp JordanLower Ramp 
     - There is a challenging portage at the put in over a small island to access the creek.  Wear closed toed shoes and have a painter line available to assist with the portage.
 
After the paddle, we will head to the nearby Jonathan's Grille restaurant, just outside the Camp Jordan entrance, for anyone who wants to join us.

This is a 12-mile paddle on Class I river with current.  Current is dependent on number of gates open at Dam #1.  We will meetup, drop gear,  then run shuttle and be ready to put-on at 3 PM.

Trip overview:   We'll meet at 10 am on 7/27/24 at the Longview Dr ramp and paddle down the N Chickamauga Creek, take a break, and paddle back up to the Dog Park take out.

It's an easy Class I paddle of 5 miles and 3 hours counting a break on the nicely shaded creek.

This is the rescheduled date and info

 

EVENT: TBD  ~  Class I, 6.7 mile paddle on the Sequatchie River

This is a trip on the Sequatchie River near Dunlap, TN (an hour from downtown Chattanooga).


We put in at the Water Company and paddle down to the Stone Cave Rd take out.
It's an easy Class 1 paddle of 6.7 miles and about 3 hours, counting a break with restrooms..

There is good access ramp with parking at the water company.  The take out is a bit steep and requires assistance.  

If you're interested sign up on the website by 4 pm on Thursday Aug 8, 2024, and details will be sent by email Thursday night..

We'll meet at 2 pm on Sat 8/17/2024 at the put in and run shuttle and put on. It's an easy 8.4 miles and 3.5 hours, counting a break.

We'll be going to the Los Pablanos restaurant afterwards for anyone who wants to join us.

It’s an easy 5 mile Class I so about 3 hours counting a break half way down.
 
DIRECTIONS TO SHALLOWFORD PUT IN. From Amnicola Hwy turn right onto 153 S and go a couple of miles and take the Shallowford Rd exit. Turn right for south and go a couple of miles to the bridge over the S Chickamauga Creek. Go over the bridge and then turn right at the L & W Supply and the put in is right there.

SHALLOWFORD BRIDGE. 35.0482 -85.2149
 
SHUTTLE DIRECTIONS. Turn left and go back out to 153 and turn left for North.
Go to the last exit before the dam which is Exit 6 Amnicola Hwy.
Turn left and go over 153 and then immediately left again for Access Rd.
Take the first right onto Old Harrison Pike. Go a couple of miles and you’ll see the creek on the left.
Follow the main road which turns left over the creek and right after the bridge turn left into Sterchi Farm.

Class I at the bridge below the Lightfoot bridge and a couple of shallow spots. Go all the way right.
There is a bridge at Lightfoot Mill Rd, then 2 RR bridges , a pipe -no problem, then Bonny Oaks steel bridge and 2 more RR bridges.
At low water there are 5 fish weirs between Shallowford and Lightfoot.  Keep your eyes open to spot them.

EVENT:  Lower Ocoee from Big Creek ramp to Greasy Creek

Details: 

Meet on the Big Creek put in (whitewater private boater takeout), run shuttle, and put on. 

There is some easy Class I near Big Creek, then lazy current downstream to Greasy Creek..

We'll paddle up Big Creek for about 100 yards before heading downstream for a couple of miles to Greasy Creek where we'll paddle on the lake a bit before taking out.

About a 3 hour trip counting a break.

Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. Birchwood, TN, Sandhill Cranes

EVENT: Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. 545 Priddy Rd, (S. Blythe Ferry Ramp) Birchwood, TN 37308

 

We'll meet at the Blythe Ferry ramp put in at 12 noon on Sat 11/8/24 and paddle up the Hiwassee River to view the migrating Sandhill Cranes, We will be watching for the very rare Whooping Cranes (all white), White Pelicans, Bald Eagles, and Ospreys. 

 

Paddlers can then return on the Hiwassee, approx. a 2 mile round trip 1-hour trip, or paddle around the island and return on the TN River for a 5 mile paddle, 2-3 hour trip.

NOTES:  This is often a cold weather paddle. Do not wear cotton clothing which increases the risk of hypothermia.  Contact the trip lead if you need assitance planning your paddle gear for a cold weather trip.

 

We'll be going to Monkey Town Brew Pub afterwards in Dayton, TN for anyone who wants to join us.
