EVENT: TN RIVER, CHICK DAM TO HARRISON MARINA
This is a paddle suggested for some of the longer boats since this is open water all of the way and frequent power boat traffic, meaning its best for boats 14 feet or longer. The ability to self rescue in deep water is a good skill to have on this paddle although it hopefully won't be needed. It's at 9 mile, at least 3 hour paddle. There can be wind and white caps. There are restrooms at the put in and take out. Put in will be at the Chickamauga Lake public boat ramp near the Chickamauga Lake Marina, and take out will be at the Harrison Bay State Park near their boat ramp. Both of these ramps are busy with power boats. Lunch will be at the Dockside Cafe at the Harrison Bay State Park take out point. We will be shuttling cars. Directions will follow on Friday to those that sign up. This is a Sunday paddle. The trip will be led by Eric Burnett.

EVENT:
NICKAJACK LAKE - SHELLMOUND AND BAT CAVE
Meet at 6 pm for dinner and put on at 7.45 pm (EST), view from 8.40 to 8.50.
There was 102,000 grey bats there in 2016 according to TVA count and 97,000 in 2019, They are
coming back from the White Nose Syndrome, which started in 2007 in the NE and was killing them. It’s a
fungus that gets on their noses and wakes them up during hibernation.
Once they wake up they get hungry and fly out to eat but there’s no food (mosquitoes) and they die.
It’s a breeding cave. They migrate to hibernate as this cave doesn’t get cold enough, but there’s no food
in winter.
The bats are there from April till the end of September. They have a cure now and they are trying to
build up the populations again. The cave is fenced off but is a couple of hundred feet deep but with a very low ceiling. Water inside
the entrance is 30 feet deep. The cave has served as shelter for Native Americans and Pirates and was a source of Saltpeter
(droppings) for making gunpowder during the War of 1812 and in the Civil War by both sides.
Before the dam was built in 1967 a stream ran out of it and it was 140 ft wide and 50 feet high so the
water is still 30 ft deep at the entrance. It was fenced in 1981 to protect the bats.
ACTUAL BAT CAVE COORDINATES FOR PADDLERS. 34.992 -85.612
DIRECTIONS TO SHELLMOUND RAMP. Take I-24 W from Chattanooga towards Nashville to Exit 158,
which is the first exit after crossing over Nickajack Lake, which is about 20 minutes from Chattanooga.

Shellmound Campground and ramp sign. Stay left for the ramp, bathrooms and picnic area.

EVENT:
This is an August 19 paddle trip and it starts on site at Carters Lake at 10 am EST. Please, if you sign up and can't make it let me know so we don't wait on you.
Carters Lake is a man-made reservoir located on the Coosawattee River in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Gilmer and Murray counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is the state's deepest lake. This will be a 3 mile paddle one way in open water paddle with time to get wet at one of the swim areas. There is a paddle in camping island that is worth checking out for a future overnight destination. We can also paddle around and go to other destinations. This might be a nice trip to bring a picnic lunch. Long boats or SUP's would be best for this trip since it's open water and it's already a 2 hour paddle.. All in all I figure it will take an hour's paddle back and forth and 30 to 45 minutes for lunch and then the drive back.
The Woodring Branch Boat Ramp is the destination and no shuttle will be needed. The coordinates for the boat ramp are 34.610552, 84.635587

EVENT:
We will begin at 10 am at the public boat ramp located at the Rivermont Park located off of Hixson Pike/Lupton Drive/Dixie Drive. ( 35.09608, -85.26545). To get to the creek we will paddle upstream on the Tennessee River (this will be easiest for the longboats and harder for short boats) for a couple of miles to the mouth of the North Chickamauga Creek. The current is negligible in this area of the creek. We can paddle as far as we like but will shoot for at least 1.5 miles miles up the creek to get to the Hixson Greenway where we can get out and eat a picnic lunch. We can paddle further on this serene creek if we choose. There are restrooms at the HIxson Greenway. I expect we will be back at the end of the day between 3 and 4 pm. There is no shuttle needed, we will put in and take out at the public boat ramp. Parking is free.
Please let me know if you register for this event and your plans change and you are unable to attend.
Note that if you originally registered for the trip that began at the Coolidge Park ramp which had to be changed you are automatically registered for this trip.
Eric Burnett will be the trip leader.
