South Chick & Stargazing

Saturday morning 9 of us met at the Sterchi Farm ramp and paddled down the South Chick and under the new pedestrian bridge to the bridge opening festival, which opened up a new section of the Greenway on the S Chick. We walked around the exhibits there, ate, and then headed back up to the put in. A nice trip.

Saturday evening we went to fellow paddler Richard’s Astronomical Society star gazing party at Harrison Bay SP. They had about a dozen telescopes set up pointed at different stars, and literally hundreds of people showed up, lined up at each scope and saw the stars, and moved on to the next one.

Some of the telescopes like Richard’s were as big as a cannon with about a 12 inch barrel and 5 feet long with a 50 pound swivel base and a magnification up to 180 times.

There were a lot of kids there and I loved their enthusiasm, and Richard and his crew really connected with everyone and did a great job. My favorites were the details of the moon’s surface, and seeing the rings around Jupiter. It was a perfectly clear night and a good time was had by all.
