Hiwassee Moon Paddle for July and trip 6/21Trip Report for Hiwassee Moonlight Paddle on Monday, June 21 Paddlers: Dallas Fox, Jason Tays, Tony Hill, Doug Peace, Lynn Bartenelli and Candice Bates If you have never paddled the Hiwassee in the moonlight you have missed out. This is a magical, mystical experience. The combination of sunset and moonglow is most beautiful. We met at Hiwassee at 8:30.We were on the water by 9. The three quarters moon was bright and it was warm so when it got dark we had mist in some places. As we paddled down river we startled many a heron and they squaked away in protest. Learning to read water in moonlight was a new experience for most of us but we had no swims although some of us got caught on rocks. If you do this paddle be sure to bring a splash jacket or something warm. Folks coming from Chattanooga couldn't believe how much cooler it was when they got into the forest. Also remember the Hiwassee is cooler than you ever imagine it could be. A couple of times we got a little separated in the dark mist but it wasn't anything to scary We should have brought small lights for signaling. Several people expressed regret that they missed this trip. All I can say is you just have to decide to go if the water, moonlight and weather co-operate. We will definitely do this again.
The next full moon looks like July 25th, rising at 8:35. Some time a little before or after this date we will lead another moonlight paddle. So check your mail. Emma
